Northern cardinal — size comparison — facts and sources
The northern cardinal has a tall crest and thick, orange-red bill. The male is vivid red with a dark face, while the female is chiefly brown with red accents. It lives in scrub, woodland, parks and gardens in North America.
It eats seeds, fruit and insects. It usually stays in the same area throughout the year, and partners may maintain a lasting bond. They defend their territory during the breeding season.
Both sexes sing. Their repertoire consists of clear, whistled phrases used to contact a partner and signal their presence to neighbours. The male often sings from an exposed perch above shrubs.
