The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The mute swan has white plumage, a heavy body and a long neck usually held in a gentle curve. Black skin surrounds the orange bill and forms a characteristic basal knob. It inhabits lakes, ponds, slow rivers and sheltered bays.
It chiefly eats aquatic plants, reaching by submerging the neck and raising the rear body above water when feeding more deeply. Small invertebrates are taken with plants. During breeding a pair firmly defends its area, driving other swans away from the nest and young.
Larger gatherings may form outside breeding. Wings produce a rhythmic, far-carrying sound in flight. Despite its name, it does vocalise and can hiss loudly when alarmed.
