Mountain Bluebird — size comparison — facts and sources
The mountain bluebird lives in open landscapes of western North America. It occurs on prairies, sagebrush areas and mountain meadows. It searches for insects from a perch but can also hover above the ground before dropping towards prey.
It nests in tree cavities and nest boxes. It favours places where a small number of trees provide shelter without enclosing the entire landscape.
Outside the breeding season the birds may form flocks and move in search of fruit, including juniper berries. In winter some populations leave colder areas.
