The mandarin duck comes from East Asia, with introduced populations beyond its native range. It lives beside wooded rivers, lakes and ponds. Breeding males have colourful heads and two tall orange sail-like wing feathers. Grey-brown females have a pale eye ring extending into a stripe.
It eats aquatic plants, seeds, acorns and invertebrates. Sharp claws help it perch on branches. It nests in cavities, sometimes high above ground. Ducklings jump out before learning to fly, and the female leads them to water. Groups form more readily outside breeding.
