Magellanic penguin — size comparison — facts and sources

Two dark bands on the neck and breast identify an adult Magellanic penguin. A white arc runs from near the eye along the side of the head. Young birds do not yet have such a clear pattern.

It breeds on the coasts of Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas. It hides its nest in a burrow or beneath vegetation. Outside the breeding season many birds travel along the coasts of South America. It catches food while diving at sea.

Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the young. Burrows shelter the brood from sunlight and some threats at the surface.
