Golden-orange feathers grow from the forehead and spread behind the eyes like tousled eyebrows. The macaroni penguin has a black face, chin and throat. This dark face is an important difference from the similar royal penguin, whose cheeks and chin are usually pale.
It forms large, noisy colonies on subantarctic islands. Nests lie on the ground among rocks and sparse vegetation. It seeks food in the cold Southern Ocean. Breeding and moulting require alternating periods ashore and intensive feeding at sea.
In the colony adults use calls and postures in contact with neighbours and partners. After the breeding season their lives shift primarily back to sea.
