Long-eared owl — size comparison — facts and sources

The long-eared owl combines two habitat types: dense vegetation for daytime rest and open ground for hunting. It occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, in wooded areas, woodland edges and agricultural landscapes.

At night it patrols meadows and other open places, flying low above the ground. It catches mainly small mammals, including voles, mice and shrews. It sometimes takes small birds resting on the ground or in low vegetation.

It usually takes over abandoned nests of crows, magpies and other birds rather than building its own. Pairs may nest relatively close together. Outside breeding, long-eared owls gather at shared daytime roosts, sometimes in large numbers. During courtship males perform flights with wing claps.
