Little gull — size comparison — facts and sources
The little gull combines a small size with a delicate bill and a light build. An adult in breeding plumage has a black head and pale upperwing surfaces. In flight its dark underwings bordered by a paler trailing edge are particularly distinctive.
It chooses wet areas with water and vegetation for breeding. Outside the breeding season many birds move towards coasts and the open sea. It feeds lightly over the water, gathering small prey, and may also hunt in the air during abundant insect emergences.
Young birds have a dark upperwing pattern and differ in appearance from adults with pale upperparts and dark underwings.
