The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
A dark grey back and yellow legs are the most noticeable features of an adult lesser black-backed gull. Its bill is yellow with a red spot on the lower mandible. The shade of the upperparts varies between populations: not all birds are equally dark.
It nests in colonies on islands and coasts but also uses roofs and inland environments. It feeds flexibly, catching fish and invertebrates, gathering available food and following opportunities created by people. Many populations migrate seasonally.
It acquires adult plumage gradually, passing through successive, browner immature plumages.
