Least Sandpiper — size comparison — facts and sources

The least sandpiper breeds in northern North America in wet tundra, peatlands and wetland margins. On migration it uses both coastal and inland feeding sites. It favours shores with small plants, so it may occur slightly higher and in drier places than other small sandpipers.

It eats small invertebrates, including insects, larvae, crustaceans and worms. It takes food from the surface or probes soft ground shallowly. While feeding it moves in small steps between vegetation clumps, exploiting prey-rich water margins.

The nest lies in a small ground depression sheltered by low vegetation. Adults incubate, and mobile chicks soon gather food independently. After breeding it migrates seasonally and may flock with other shorebirds.
