North Island brown kiwi — size comparison — facts and sources

The North Island brown kiwi leads a nocturnal life on New Zealand's North Island. It slowly traverses the ground, probing litter, rotting wood and soil with its bill. It eats mainly earthworms, insect larvae and other small invertebrates. By day it rests in a burrow, ground-level hollow or dense vegetation.

The pair maintains vocal contact. The male calls at a higher pitch, while the female answers in a lower, throaty voice; calls also help announce territorial occupancy. The male incubates the eggs, unlike many birds in which this duty falls to the female or both parents.

Human-introduced mammals, especially dogs and stoats, have become serious threats. Conservation includes predator reduction and rearing some young to a stage when they are less defenceless.
