The king bird-of-paradise is a small bird of New Guinea's forests and nearby islands. Males have red plumage and two elongated ornamental tail feathers. It gathers fruit and arthropods among branches.
On a chosen canopy perch the male performs a complex courtship display, presenting feathers to a visiting female. It displays alone; the female subsequently tends the nest and chicks independently.
