Kagu — size comparison — facts and sources

The kagu is an almost flightless bird of New Caledonia’s humid forests. It has pale grey plumage, a long crest, red legs and a red bill. It spends most of its time carefully searching the forest floor. Small flaps cover the nostrils, limiting soil entry while feeding.

It eats insects, earthworms, snails and other small animals. A pair defends a forest territory and communicates with loud calls. Both parents care for the youngster. Wings spread in display reveal a contrasting pattern usually hidden on a resting bird.

Ground-dwelling habits make it especially vulnerable to introduced predators. Dogs and other non-native mammals can threaten both adults and nests.
