The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
An adult ivory gull is snow-white, including its back and wingtips. The short bill has a cool blue-grey base and a yellowish tip. Dark eyes and black legs stand out clearly against the pale feathers.
It is a High Arctic bird closely associated with sea ice. It feeds around cracks, open water and pack-ice edges. Besides small fish and invertebrates it uses carrion, including remains left by large predators. It breeds on remote islands, rocks and cliffs.
Juveniles have dark spots on their heads and feathers and are not as pure white as adults. Loss and variation of ice cover affect habitat availability. Observations near large marine mammals often relate to feeding opportunities.
