The Inca tern inhabits western South American coasts. Dark grey plumage, a red bill and distinctive white bill-base moustaches are characteristic. It feeds above productive coastal waters.
It gathers small fish and crustaceans at or just below the surface. Sheltered rock sites and other crevices provide breeding places; adults return from marine feeding grounds with chick food.
