Northern house wren — size comparison — facts and sources

The northern house wren described here as Troglodytes aedon is a North American cavity-nesting bird. The modern Cornell guide uses Northern House Wren, distinguishing it from other forms formerly grouped more broadly as one species. It feeds in scrub and low vegetation, gathering insects and spiders.

The male occupies the vicinity of suitable holes and may begin placing nesting material in several of them. The female chooses the breeding site and finishes the actual nest. It readily uses nest boxes but can also use natural crevices and small chambers around buildings.

Song helps advertise an occupied territory even though the bird itself often stays hidden. Some populations migrate seasonally.
