House sparrow — size comparison — facts and sources

The house sparrow lives close to people in towns, villages and farms. It has a stocky body and a short, powerful bill. Males have black throat bibs and grey crowns, while females are brown-grey with paler eyebrows. Birds often gather near shrubs, buildings and seed sources.

They seek grain, plant remains and insects on the ground. Young receive many invertebrates even when adults feed chiefly on plants. Nests occupy crevices and other sheltered corners, sometimes close to neighbouring pairs.

Sparrows remain sociable away from nests. They feed and roost together, maintaining contact through short chirps. An alarmed group quickly shelters in a dense shrub or nearby buildings.
