The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The hoatzin inhabits vegetation beside rivers and lakes in tropical South America. It has a long neck, an upright crest and blue skin around red eyes. It moves mainly among waterside branches, picking leaves, young shoots, flowers and fruit.
Microorganisms help digest leaves in the enlarged front part of its digestive tract. Fermentation makes use of food difficult for many other birds to exploit. It rests for long periods among vegetation after feeding.
It nests above water, and other group members may help care for the young. A threatened chick jumps into the water and can dive. Returning to branches, it uses its legs and functional wing claws. Adults lose this characteristic ability to climb using wing claws.
