Herring gull — size comparison — facts and sources

The herring gull lives along coasts, large lakes and river mouths, as well as in towns. Adults have white bodies, grey backs and yellow bills with red spots. Young are brown-mottled and acquire adult plumage gradually over several years.

It eats fish, invertebrates, eggs, carrion and refuse. It hunts, steals food from other birds and uses human leftovers. Groups gather at feeding grounds and roosts.

It nests colonially, but each pair defends its immediate nest surroundings. The adult bill’s red spot stimulates chicks: pecking there helps trigger the parent’s feeding response.
