Hermit Thrush — size comparison — facts and sources

The hermit thrush occurs in wooded North America. During breeding it uses forests with sheltered ground vegetation and exposed ground patches. Wintering birds may also visit scrub, parks and other places with berries and dense vegetation shelter.

In spring it eats mainly insects, larvae and other small animals. It moves over the ground in short hops, stopping to examine litter. It characteristically raises its tail, then lowers it slowly. Fruit becomes more important in winter.

The nest may be on the ground or low in vegetation, with choice differing across the range. The male marks territory through song and participates in courtship. Outside breeding birds may associate with winter groups of small woodland species searching trees for food.
