Helmeted guineafowl — size comparison — facts and sources
The helmeted guineafowl has a stocky body covered in dark feathers with small white spots, a small bare head and a bony helmet covered by a keratinous layer. It lives on African savannas, in scrub and fields. Strong legs carry it across ground as it collects seeds, green plant parts, insects and small vertebrates.
It feeds in flocks. Birds call frequently, and one alarm may alert the whole group. They usually first escape danger by running but can also burst into flight. They roost on tree branches at night and return to ground feeding areas in the morning.
