The harpy eagle is a powerful raptor of tropical Central and South American forests. It has a grey head with a divided crest, a dark back and pale belly. Females are much heavier than males. Short, broad wings and a long tail aid manoeuvring among trees, while exceptionally strong legs end in enormous talons.
It chiefly hunts tree-dwelling mammals, including sloths and monkeys, but also takes birds and other vertebrates. It may watch the canopy from a suitable branch for a long time before launching a short attack.
A pair occupies a large area and builds a nest high in a large tree. Raising a youngster takes a long time: food is still supplied after its first flights. Clearing mature forests reduces both prey availability and the number of trees capable of supporting the large nest.
