Balearica regulorum
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The grey crowned crane has a golden fan of stiff head feathers, pale cheeks and a grey body with contrasting wings. It inhabits African wet meadows, savannas and fields. Walking over the ground, it collects seeds and plant parts as well as insects, amphibians and other small animals.
A long hind toe grips branches securely, allowing it to roost in trees. Partners communicate vocally and dance with bows and leaps. They nest at ground level. Chicks leave soon after hatching and follow their parents to feeding areas.
