The Eurasian teal is a small duck of Northern Hemisphere shallow wetlands, ponds and floodwaters. Near banks it gathers seeds and small invertebrates, searching water and soft sediment.

Outside breeding it forms flocks, including with other ducks. During migration it stops at waters with shallow feeding areas and vegetation cover.
