The greater scaup nests on shallow lakes and ponds in open, treeless northern wetlands. It chooses sites with wind shelter and suitable vegetation. Winter habitats include bays, coasts and large lakes; North American flocks winter on both Atlantic and Pacific shores.
It eats molluscs, crustaceans, aquatic insects and plants. Flocks form outside breeding.
