The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The great tit has a black head with large white cheeks and a yellow belly crossed by a dark stripe. It inhabits forests, parks and gardens, including city centres. It actively searches branches, leaves and bark for insects and spiders. In autumn and winter it more readily takes seeds and fruit and visits feeders.
It nests in cavities and boxes. In spring a pair intensively collects invertebrates for chicks; caterpillars may account for much of the food. The nest is concealed, but frequent parental visits reveal its location.
A male announces territory with repeated, distinct song phrases. Great tits also use many contact and alarm calls. After breeding they may join mixed flocks travelling together between trees.
