Great spotted woodpecker — size comparison — facts and sources

The great spotted woodpecker has black-and-white plumage, red undertail coverts and a strong, straight bill. It inhabits forests, parks, orchards and large gardens. Stiff tail feathers brace its body while climbing trunks. It extracts larvae beneath bark and collects insects from wood surfaces, also eating seeds and nuts.

Spring drumming is territorial signalling. Rapid bill strikes on a resonant tree section transmit sound over considerable distances. This differs from excavation to find food or create shelter.

A pair excavates a nesting cavity. After use, another bird unable to dig its own chamber may take it over. The woodpecker therefore creates breeding sites for other woodland residents too.
