The great horned owl inhabits forests, open woodland and the edges of built-up areas in the Americas. It has prominent feather tufts on its head, yellow eyes and powerful, feathered legs. It hunts mainly at night or dusk, detecting mammals, birds and other vertebrates by sight and hearing.
It often watches from a branch and makes a short flight to seize detected prey. It regurgitates bones, fur and other undigested remains in pellets. To breed, it may occupy a nest left by another large bird. The pair defends the surrounding area, and the young continue to receive food from their parents after leaving the nest.
