Great hornbill — size comparison — facts and sources

The great hornbill lives in tropical forests of South and South-East Asia. It has black-and-white plumage and an enormous yellowish bill topped by a high casque. It feeds in the canopy, chiefly on fruit but also small animals. Carrying seeds away from feeding sites contributes to forest regeneration.

Breeding depends on large tree cavities. The female enters a chamber and narrows the entrance to a slit. She incubates and tends the young inside while the male regularly brings food through the remaining opening. This unusual arrangement requires both a safe old tree and rich feeding grounds from which one bird can sustain the family.
