Great egret — size comparison — facts and sources

The great egret is a widespread wetland bird also occurring in Poland. While hunting it stands still or wades slowly, waiting for the right moment. It rapidly extends its neck to catch a fish or other prey.

It may also feed on wet meadows and fields. It often breeds colonially, with nests in trees or shrubs. Parents supply food to chicks and defend the immediate nest surroundings.

Outside breeding birds may gather at productive feeding sites, although hunting itself usually remains individual. Good feeding-site locations change with water level. A shallow zone may offer fish access, whereas the same water body becomes less useful after heavy flooding.
