Gouldian finch — size comparison — facts and sources

The Gouldian finch inhabits tropical savannas in northern Australia. Its green back, purple breast and yellow belly form clearly separated blocks of colour. Wild birds have different head-colour forms, chiefly black and red.

Flocks search for grass seeds, moving as availability changes. Small invertebrates supplement the diet. Outside breeding, Gouldian finches may feed alongside other estrildid finches in areas with access to water.

They nest in tree cavities. Both nesting-tree availability and successive seed supplies depend on savanna conditions; the timing and pattern of fires influence the plants the birds use throughout the year.
