The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The male golden pheasant has a golden crest, orange-and-black cape, red underparts and a very long patterned tail. Females are brown and finely marked, disappearing more easily into undergrowth. Its natural habitat is Chinese mountain forest and bamboo scrub.
It stays near the ground for most of the day, seeking seeds, shoots, berries and invertebrates, and roosts in trees. In courtship the male spreads its cape and turns sideways to display coloured feathers. The female incubates alone and leads chicks that move over the ground from the start.
