Glaucous gull — size comparison — facts and sources

The glaucous gull is a bulky, pale gull with a powerful bill. An adult has a very pale grey back and white wingtips without black markings. Its legs are pink, and its yellow bill bears a red spot on the lower mandible.

It breeds in the Arctic on cliffs, islands and coasts. It is an opportunistic feeder: besides fish and invertebrates it eats other birds' eggs and young and uses carrion. After breeding some individuals migrate to cool coasts beyond the breeding area.

Young birds are mottled cream and brown. Their plumage becomes progressively paler over successive years until they acquire the adults' white-and-grey plumage.
