Gentoo penguin — size comparison — facts and sources
Broad white patches above the eyes, joined across the back of the head, make the gentoo penguin easily recognisable. Adults have orange-red bills and pale orangish feet. A fairly long tail projects behind the body and may touch the ground while walking.
It establishes colonies on exposed coasts and islands. Stone nests occur both near beaches and on higher ground. At sea it pursues prey skilfully with wings transformed into flippers. Its food composition depends on location and the availability of fish and crustaceans.
Pairs use pebbles to build their nests. After breeding, moulting requires another period on land using accumulated reserves.
