Galápagos penguin — size comparison — facts and sources

The small Galápagos penguin has a dark head edged by a narrow white band and a black band across its pale breast. Pink, unfeathered skin near the bill helps it lose heat.

It lives only in the Galápagos. Close to the equator, it benefits from cool ocean currents that bring food to the islands. It may spend the day in the water, while on land it seeks shade in cracks in the lava. It nests in a sheltered place that protects its eggs from overheating.

Breeding success depends on the food available at sea; warm El Niño episodes make fish harder to obtain.
