The flammulated owl is a small owl of mountain forests in western North America. During breeding it mainly selects open stands containing old pines and a mixture of other trees.
It catches moths, beetles, crickets and other invertebrates, taking them from branches, the ground or the air. It hunts after dark, making short flights from a chosen lookout and returning to shelter.
It breeds in tree cavities, often excavated earlier by woodpeckers. The female incubates the eggs, while the male supplies her with food. After breeding the birds migrate south, where active insects can also be found in winter.
