The fish crow inhabits eastern North America, especially near water. It occurs beside beaches, estuaries, swamps, lakes and rivers, as well as on fields and in cities. In winter it may gather where abundant food remains available over time.
Despite its name it does not eat only fish. It eats crabs, other invertebrates, fruit, seeds, carrion and bird and turtle eggs. It can steal food from other birds and searches waterbird colonies for readily accessible broods.
It builds its nest high in a tree, sometimes near other pairs or heron colonies. Outside breeding it is sociable and forms large flocks. Individuals cooperate in driving off predators, and their curiosity includes investigating and playing with objects found nearby.
