The ferruginous hawk is a bird of open western North American areas. It inhabits grassy plains, semi-desert scrub and sparse forest margins. To breed it needs sites suitable for a large nest; in winter it selects areas with abundant rabbits, ground squirrels or prairie dogs.
Small and medium-sized mammals form its dietary basis. It hunts from the air, perches and sometimes directly from the ground, walking or running after prey. Feeding methods and dominant prey differ between regions on either side of the Rocky Mountains.
Its nest may be on an isolated tree, rocky outcrop, artificial structure or even near ground level. Partners select the site and gather material together. They usually remain alone or in pairs but in winter may feed near others and share roosting places.
