The European robin has an orange face and chest, brown back and thin bill. Spotted juveniles initially lack orange feathers. It inhabits forests, dense scrub, parks and gardens.
It seeks ground invertebrates supplemented by fruit and seeds, usually alone. Strong territory defence and songs continue outside breeding. Northern populations migrate; others remain nearer breeding areas.
