European goldfinch — size comparison — facts and sources
The European goldfinch has a red mask, black-and-white head and broad yellow wing band. It inhabits open woodland, fallow land, orchards and gardens with seed-rich plants.
Its slender bill extracts thistle and other seeds. Small insects are also eaten. Outside breeding, flocks travel between feeding grounds and maintain contact through ringing calls.
