The European bee-eater has a slender, slightly curved bill and colourful plumage with a yellow throat and turquoise underparts. It hunts above open country, catching large flying insects, including bees and wasps.

Before swallowing a stinging insect it beats and rubs it against a perch. It breeds colonially in tunnels dug into sandy banks. Each pair occupies its own nesting chamber and brings insects to chicks.
