Eurasian wryneck — size comparison — facts and sources
The Eurasian wryneck is a member of the woodpecker family. It has a slender body, a short grey bill and finely patterned feathers that resemble bark. When threatened, it can extend its neck and sway its head in a snake-like display.
It often forages on the ground, using its long tongue to collect ants and their larvae. It nests in existing cavities. In Poland it breeds along woodland edges and in places such as orchards and gardens. Polish breeding birds leave in late summer and autumn.
