The Eurasian wren is a very small brown bird with a short, often cocked tail. Fine barring patterns its wings and body. Despite its small size, it has a strong, far-carrying song.

It searches dense undergrowth, thickets and damp gardens for small invertebrates among branches and close to the ground. In cold weather it may share sheltered roosts with other wrens.

Older sources treated this species more broadly, together with its North American relatives; this account concerns the present Eurasian species.
