The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The common blackbird inhabits forests, parks and gardens and is well established in towns. Adult males are black with yellow-orange bills and pale eye rings. Females are brown with duller bills and faint breast spotting.
It feeds chiefly on the ground, tossing dry leaves, pausing to watch for litter movement or pulling earthworms from damp soil. It also eats insects, berries and other fruit, whose dietary contribution increases in late summer and outside breeding.
In spring a male sings from an exposed branch, roof or aerial, especially at dawn and evening. Melodious song announces occupied territory. Abrupt, sharp alarm calls accompany threats near the bird or nest.
