The elf owl occurs in southwestern North America and Mexico. It uses desert landscapes with large cacti, dry woodland and river valleys. Holes in plants and trees matter, providing shelter from daytime heat and places to rear young.
At dusk and night it catches mainly insects and other small invertebrates. It hunts from a perch, taking prey in the air or gathering it from plants and the ground. Its diet may also include scorpions, stripped of dangerous parts before eating.
The nest lies in a cavity, often previously excavated by a woodpecker in a cactus or tree. The male brings food to the female and chicks. Some populations move south seasonally, using areas that also provide invertebrates outside breeding.
