Eastern bluebird — size comparison — facts and sources
The eastern bluebird searches for food in open areas with access to lookout points and shelter. From a low branch or post it watches for insects, then flies down to seize prey on the ground. Small fruits play a larger dietary role in autumn and winter.
It nests in existing cavities that it does not excavate itself. It also uses well-positioned nest boxes, so protecting nesting places can effectively help local populations. The male shows the female a chosen site, but she does most nest-building work.
Outside the breeding season birds may travel in small groups. They most favour a combination of open space and trees offering cavities and perches.
