Dunlin — size comparison — facts and sources

The dunlin breeds in northern North America and Eurasia. It inhabits tundra and wet areas with low vegetation, and populations differ in migration routes. After breeding it often stays on sea coasts, estuaries and extensive mudflats exposed by the tide.

It probes sediment with its bill and gathers available invertebrates. Insects and larvae matter on breeding grounds, while worms, molluscs and small crustaceans also matter along coasts. Feeding birds may move close together, rhythmically lowering their heads towards the substrate.

It nests on the ground, usually beside a vegetation clump. Both parents incubate, and after hatching the young walk and find food themselves. Outside breeding, dunlins form large flocks that rapidly change flight direction above water when threatened.
