The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The dodo was a large, flightless bird found only on Mauritius. It belonged to the pigeon family. It had strong legs and a large bill, and its ancestors gradually lost flight in an island environment lacking native terrestrial predators.
It inhabited forests and their surroundings. Preserved bones indicate a more upright, agile build than that familiar from many old paintings. Plumage details are reconstructed from historical depictions and scarce remains.
It became extinct in the seventeenth century after people settled the island. Hunting and introduced animals that attacked the birds and their ground nests contributed to its disappearance.
