Dalmatian pelican — size comparison — facts and sources

The Dalmatian pelican is among the largest pelicans. It has pale silver-grey plumage, a long bill with an expandable pouch and curly feathers behind the head. It lives beside Eurasian lakes, river deltas and estuaries, using extensive shallows.

It chiefly catches fish, scooping them from the surface or just beneath it. Water drains from the pouch before swallowing. It may feed alone or with pelicans helping concentrate fish in a smaller area. It breeds colonially on islands and vegetation platforms, where adults bring food to chicks.
