Cooper’s hawk — size comparison — facts and sources

Cooper's hawk inhabits forests and wooded landscapes in North America. It also occurs in parks and suburbs where surrounding trees provide cover.

It hunts mainly birds, often the size of a starling, pigeon or thrush. It alternates rapid wingbeats with short glides and manoeuvres skilfully among branches in pursuit. Small mammals supplement its diet; their importance may be greater in the western part of its range.

It builds a stick nest in a tree, usually beneath canopy cover and near the trunk. The male helps build it, and courtship includes display flights and bows. The pair defends the nest surroundings while rearing young.
